IT’S the task that most of us avoid like the plague – but removing grim mould from your washing machine has to be done every once in a while.

Despite this, research has found that over a whopping 63 per cent of households across the nation leave their washing machine for long periods of time before giving it any clean.

The cleaning whizz revealed how to keep your washing machine sparkling clean using common household products

According to research, more than half of Britons don’t bother cleaning their washing machines

Warm temperatures, soil and bacteria from clothes, detergent and fabric softener residue, as well as the dark environment of your washing machine drum, makes the perfect environment for mould to grow.

Whilst there are hundreds of cleaning products in the market to tackle this issue, Lynsey Crombie, the self-proclaimed Queen of Clean, explained how using two inexpensive household ingredients can help to keep mould bacteria at bay.

The whizz has become a sensation and regularly shares cleaning tips and tricks on TikTok and Instagram.

Revealing her hack, she instructed: “If you would prefer a natural solution use soda crystal, pour 500g direct into the drum and put on the hottest cycle.

“For awkward nooks and crannies use a recycled toothbrush and scrub with some washing-up liquid.

“If you have any mould in the rubber seal, drench kitchen roll in white vinegar and then stick it over the mould patches. Leave this for a good 15 minutes.”

According to The Express, fellow cleaning influencer Nicki Rodriguez, who runs the blog The Essex House Dolly, said that choosing natural substances for cleaning “not only work out cheaper” but are also just as effective as supermarket-bought products.

“Two cups of vinegar straight into the drum and a concoction of bicarbonate of soda mixed with warm water into the detergent drawer will get rid of limescale.”

When cleaning the inside of your washing machine, it’s crucial to not forget the smaller components, such as the detergent drawer.

Lynsey instructed: “Remove the drawer and knock out any build-up product this normally gets stuck if you are using a powder rather than a liquid.

“Then soak it in a solution of warm soapy water, if you have any black spots this is mould so add in a few drops of white vinegar too.”

For smaller crevices that are hard to reach, you can use an old toothbrush.

Before placing it back into your washing machine, ensure the drawer is completely dry.

If you prefer to stick to store-bought products, Lynsey also shared some of her favourites.

She explained: “There are many washing machine cleaning products you can buy in the supermarket.

“I recommend Dr Beckmann and the Vamoosh ones as these both give amazing results.”
