The man arrived at the Queen’s Head in Chislehurst, south-east London with two petrol cans in his bag then set himself on fire in the car park.

He was taken to hospital by the London Ambulance Service but his current condition is unclear.

If it wasn’t for the quick action from three blokes in the pub and one of the bouncers ripping his burning clothes off and extinguishing him he would have been dead, said one witness.

There were two petrol cans in his bag and it started catching flame and I extinguished it, heart was racing.

Photos of the scene show an ambulance crew taking a stretcher out of their vehicle as police speak to bystanders outside the pub.

Debris, including what appeared to be one of the cans of petrol, was also seen strewn on the ground in the car park.

The incident forced road closures in the area, with several bus routes on put on diversion.

The Met Police said in a tweet: Officers were called at approx 9pm to reports of a man committing self-harm in High Road, Chiselhurst.
