Meghan Markle shared this poem, written by African-American poet Nayyirah Waheed, on her now-defunct personal Instagram page when she was an actress

The poem, written by African-American poet Nayyirah Waheed, speaks to a daughter and says it is not her beauty that will guide her through life but her self-confidence.

It says that “knowing your worth” as a person “can save your life.”

The poem states that “every being is born beautiful” and “beauty is a given”, but raising someone on beauty alone will “starve” them and make them “raw” and “weak”.

The poem first appeared in Nayyirah’s 2013 collection Salt, but Meghan shared it with followers in 2017; the year before she married Prince Harry.

Meghan and Harry welcomed their daughter Lilibet Diana into the world on June 4

Meghan and Harry are currently living in Santa Barbara with Archie

Lilibet  “Lili” Diana Mountbatten-Windsor was born at 11.40am on Friday in California, close to the couple’s £11million mansion.

Meghan and Harry said in a statement about their new baby girl: “She is more than we could have ever imagined.”

Royal experts said the choice of Lilibet may be an olive branch to the Royal Family after recent controversies.

A statement confirmed the baby girl weighed 7lbs 11oz and “both mother and child are healthy and well and settling in at home”.

Meghan previously revealed her hope of one day having a daughter, and said she has a precious gift she is passing on to her.

Back in 2015, Meghan said she hopes to one day pass down her £4,800 Cartier watch to her daughter.

Meghan bought the pricey Cartier Tank Française after learning Suits – the television programme she starred in – had been commissioned for a third season.

The Duchess previously told Hello: “When I found out Suits had been picked up for our third season – which, at the time, felt like such a milestone – I totally splurged and bought the two-tone version [of the watch].”

She continued: “I had it engraved on the back, ‘To M.M. From M.M.’”

And the Queen, Prince William, and Kate Middleton have congratulated Meghan and Harry on the birth of their daughter.

Her Majesty and the royals said they were “delighted” at the news and made a touching tribute to the couple and their baby girl.

A Buckingham Palace spokesperson said: “The Queen, The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall, and The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have been informed and are delighted with the news of the birth of a daughter for The Duke and Duchess of Sussex.”

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge tweeted: “We are all delighted by the happy news of the arrival of baby Lili.

“Congratulations to Harry, Meghan and Archie.”
