MEGHAN Markle made a touching tribute to her husband’s grandmother today as she joined the rest of the royal family at the Queen’s funeral procession.

Meghan wore a pair of pearl earrings which she received back in 2018 and subsequently wore during her only solo engagement with the Queen the same year.

During the engagement, Meghan and the Queen travelled to Cheshire to open the new Mersey Gateway Bridge.

Meghan told Oprah Winfrey during her infamous interview that the Queen gifted her the earrings, along with a matching pearl necklace.

“We had breakfast together that morning, and she’d given me a beautiful gift, and I just really loved being in her company,” she told Oprah.

Wearing pearls are part of a royal tradition, which Kate Middleton also adhered to as she donned a pearl necklace.

White pearls are officially worn during the mourning period by the family.

They are often referred to as “mourning jewellery”, and this dates back to Queen Victoria’s reign.

Following the death of her husband Prince Albert, Queen Victoria famously wore black for 40 years in tribute.

The only jewellery she wore was black or colourless, and strands of pearls were a frequent feature.

The pearls were thought to be symbolic of tears, according to The Telegraph.

The Duchess paired the earrings with a sleek hairstyle and black coat dress, along with a black netted veil, as is also tradition.

She joined Camilla, The Queen Consort, Kate, The Princess of Wales, and Sophie, Countess of Wessex, in cars behind her husband, who marched behind his grandmother’s coffin.
