However, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge were reportedly moved by Kate as she discussed how the virus has devastated her and her children Darcey, 14, and Billy, 11.

The presenter’s husband Derek is still seriously ill in hospital after seven months.

“You are doing amazingly though. If it wasn’t for social distancing we would both give you a hug,” William said.

William and Kate presented six representatives from the NHS with the Pride of Britain Award at one of Britain’s oldest hospitals, St Bartholomew’s in the City of London.

The Duke said: “The devastating impact of the coronavirus pandemic has reminded us as a nation of how much we owe to the thousands of NHS workers who have gone far beyond the call of duty this year.

“They have worked tirelessly around the clock, with humility and compassion, in the most challenging of circumstances, putting their own lives on the line to help others.

“It is fitting that we are here today at Britain’s oldest hospital to thank and celebrate our NHS staff and to honour them with a Pride of Britain award.”

HOAR revealed Kate will be fronting a documentary on ITV about coronavirus called Still Fighting.

Kate will investigate the effects of the virus on the UK, looking at other families who have also been touched by the pandemic.

A source said: “Kate is keen to spread the message about how serious Covid-19 can be and was happy to talk about it if it meant people would take it seriously, as well as updating the thousands of fans who ask daily about Derek’s progress.

“Kate and her family have had their lives turned upside down by the virus and want to show the effect it’s had on them, but also on others going through the same thing.”

Derek is the country’s longest-fighting Covid-19 patient after surpassing six months in the hospital.
