BASED on what we’ve always heard about Prince William and Kate Middleton’s time at university, the early days of their relationship sounds like something straight out of a fairytale.

But according to royal author Tom Quinn, the royal lovebirds’ first meeting was more like a cringeworthy scene from a rom-com – as William apparently fell for Kate the first time they met. In the most literal sense of the word.

Prince William allegedly tripped over the first time he met Kate Middleton

Appearing on the Channel 5 documentary William and Kate: Too Good to be True?, the royal expert described the couple’s slightly awkward first meeting.

Both William and Kate had taken gap years before finding themselves in the same halls of residence and studying Art History at St Andrews University in 2001 – although William later switched to a Geography degree.

Tom explained: “One of the funny stories is he was so desperate to meet her that as he walked towards her, he apparently tripped and said, ‘Oh that’s a terrible start, you’re going to think I’m a complete clot!’”

Luckily for William, his future wife was said to have laughed off his stumble and the pair became fast friends.

Kate and William were friends before developing a romantic relationship

But it wasn’t until Kate walked the runway in THAT see-through dress during a charity fashion show a year later that William reportedly started to see her in a romantic light.

As Kate was walking down the runway, the Prince allegedly turned to his friend Fergus Boyd and said: “Wow, Fergus, Kate’s hot!”

However, royal correspondent Simon Vigar claims that William was being “chased” by girls at the time – while Kate chose to play cool.

He added: “When they were at university at St Andrews, I have it on good authority that one of the few girls not chasing William was Catherine.

Kate said she was shy the first time she met William

“If that’s true, she played an absolute blinder. He was definitely the target of lots of Sloaney girls there at university, but it wasn’t until the infamous fashion show that William noticed Catherine.”

During their engagement interview in 2009, Kate recalled feeling embarrassed the first time she met her future husband.

She said: “I actually went bright red when I met you and sort of scuttled off feeling very shy about meeting you.

“William wasn’t there for quite a bit of the time initially, he wasn’t there from Fresher’s Week, so it did take a bit of time for us to get to know each other, but we did become very close friends from quite early on.”
