Olivia, 45, replaced Claire, 35, after two series of playing the Monarch in the early years of her reign.

The rest of the cast was also updated to reflect the aging of the Royals, with Helena Bonham Carter taking over as Princess Margaret from Vanessa Kirby and Tobias Menzies replacing Matt Smith as Prince Philip.

However some fans were quick to take to social media to voice their disappointment with the new cast and fears they wouldn’t be able to get used to them in the regal roles.

One wrote on Twitter: “Im struggling with the cast change in this new season of #TheCrown. Claire Foy really did something with that character. #thecrown3.”

A third added: “I love Olivia Colman but Claire Foy killed the role of Elizabeth. Watching this season of The Crown without Claire is slightly disappointing.”

Meanwhile a fourth shared: “I’m sorry but Olivia Coleman is just Olivia Coleman in The Crown. She is not the queen. Bring back Claire Foy.

“And Olivia Coleman is one of my favourite actors, brilliant in Fleabag, Broadchurch, Peep Show etc. #TheCrownNetflix #thecrown3.”

Some viewers have found the change difficult to adjust to

However, other fans were loving the series three cast and the drama within the season.

One wrote: “It took me three episodes to put Foy & Co. to the back of my mind (albeit, begrudginglyI loved that magnificent cast, goddamnit). However, once I did, I can’t deny #TheCrown remains as riveting as ever. Crazy bingeable, too.”

Another tweeted: “Already streamed 7 episodes! Episode 3 was deeply moving. The actors are spectacular and embody their characters beautifully. Brave #thecrownseason3 #TheCrown.”

A third agreed, writing: “Sunch a smooth transition to S3 @TheCrownNetflix Expectedly phenomenal performances by Olivia Colman and @TobiasMenzies Utterly enjoyed ep.1. Although impatient to see more, Im planning to savour it, leisurely, bit by bit. :).”
