The series will look closely at Charles’ relationships with his mother, Queen Elizabeth II, as well as his first meeting with Camilla Parker Bowles.

The Crown has always sparked debate among viewers about how accurate some of the storylines about the Royal Family are, and speaking to press at the world premiere, Josh insisted they shouldn’t believe everything they see.

He said: “Ultimately it’s just not real.

“We’re making a work of fiction and I think people understand that.

There’s only so much of the real person I’m actually playing, beyond that it’s very much about creating a character.”

Josh joins the cast of season three alongside Olivia Colman, who is taking over as The Queen from Claire Foy, as well as Helena Bonham Carter (Princess Margaret) and Tobias Menzies (Prince Philip).

He continued: “I was a big fan of series one and two so stepping into this felt like a really exciting step for me.

I learned so much from working with such an inspiring group of actors, role models for me.
