THE Queen and Prince Philip celebrated their 72nd wedding anniversary last month, having tied the knot in 1947.

And according to one royal expert, once the pair were officially man and wife, the Queen couldn’t stop gushing about her amazing new husband.

Sally said the pair were “deeply in love” when they married

Vanity Fair writer Sally Bedell Smith claims the pair were deeply in love when they married.

In a letter written to her parents during the honeymoon, Elizabeth thanked them for the wonderful “example they have set”.

I only hope that I can bring up my children in the happy atmosphere of love and fairness which Margaret and I have grown up in,” she said.

She added that she and Philip behave as though we had belonged to each other for years! Philip is an angel – he is so kind and thoughtful.

Sally claimed Philip, meanwhile, wrote his own touching letter to his mother-in-law.

He declared that his new wife was the only thing in this world which is absolutely real to me and my ambition is to weld the two of us into a new combined existence that will not only be able to withstand the shocks directed at us but will also have a positive existence for the good,” she wrote.

Elizabeth and Philip first met in July 1939 when Her Majesty was 13 and the Duke, 18.

According to the Queen’s former governess, Marion Crawford, it was Philip’s unusual skill that first impressed “Princess Elizabeth”.

The Queen was visiting Dartmouth Britannia Royal Naval College – where Philip was training at the time – along with Princess Margaret, King George VI and the Queen Mother.

In her 1950 memoir, The Little Princesses, Marion explained this is when the Duke of Edinburgh and the Queen met properly for the first time.

During the visit, Philip suggested they go to Dartmouth tennis court – and once they arrived, it was the prince’s ability to jump over the nets that wowed the Queen.

According to Marion, she said: How high he can jump!

Later on in the visit, Philip accompanied the family on board the King’s yacht for dinner, during which Marion claimed Elizabeth was “pink-faced” as she laughed with the prince.

It wasn’t until years later that the pair started writing to each other when Philip served in the navy during World War Two.

They married on November 20, 1947 at Westminster Abbey, before welcoming Prince Charles just under a year later.
