Bernice is Back (But Don't Get Too Comfortable)

My mate Dave texted me at 11:47 PM last night: "Bernice returning to Emmerdale!" Like I was supposed to drop everything and celebrate.

But honestly? He's not wrong to be excited.

Samantha Giles is heading back to the Dales after two years of doing... well, whatever actors do when they're not pretending to pull pints in fictional Yorkshire pubs. The champagne's flowing at The Woolpack again, and frankly, it's about time.

Here's the thing though - don't get too attached. She's only back for Gabby and Vinny's wedding (because apparently those two are actually happening), and then she's gone again. Classic soap move, really.

The Worst Kept Secret in Soapland

A source told me everything's being kept "very hush hush" which is hilarious because here I am writing about it. The filming starts in a couple weeks, and apparently everyone on set is buzzing about working with Samantha again.

Makes sense. She's been bouncing in and out of Emmerdale since 1998 like a boomerang with commitment issues. First stint lasted until 2002, then she came back in 2004, then again in 2023, and now... well, here we are.

When she left two years ago to do The Syndicate theatre production, she was pretty clear about not wanting to return. "I don't feel I'd want to go back to Emmerdale at the moment," she said. "I'm enjoying doing other things, and teh show changes."

Famous last words, right?

DOUGRAY'S CRIMINAL EDUCATION

Speaking of comebacks, Dougray Scott just landed himself the lead in BBC's new drama Crookhaven. Guy's playing Caspian Lockett - a headmaster running a school for young criminals.

Basically Hogwarts for delinquents.

The show's based on JJ Arcanjo's book, and they've got this kid Amari Bacchus leading a cast of "Crooklings" (yes, that's actually what they're called). These kids get trained to use their criminal skills for good when they're released back into the world.

Claire Forlani's playing his wife Carmen, alongside Naomi Wirthner from Slow Horses and Keith Allen. Should hit BBC iPlayer early next year, assuming they don't mess up the editing.

Holly's Betting on a Comeback

You know what's funny? Holly Willoughby quit You Bet! because of scheduling conflicts, but now she's coming back as a celebrity guest.

That's like breaking up with someone and then showing up to their birthday party.

Stephen Mulhern's taking the show on the road this time, with Holly joining a lineup that includes Alison Hammond, Rob Beckett, Judi Love, AJ Odudu, Josh Widdicombe and Josie Gibson. Plus Babatunde Aleshe, Alesha Dixon, Danny Jones, Alex Brooker, Nick Mohammed, and soap brothers Adam and Ryan Thomas.

Stephen's "thrilled" apparently. His words: "Each week I'll be joined by a top celeb panel as our challengers take on some brilliantly bonkers and amazing challenges."

Bonkers is right.

When Fantasy Becomes Reality (Sort Of)

Here's something that'll blow your mind: dire wolves from Game of Thrones? They're actually real.

Were real. Then extinct. Now real again.

Some mad scientists at Colossal Bioscience used 73,000-year-old DNA to bring them back last year. They've got two males named Romulus and Remus, and they're about to introduce a female called Khaleesi to the pack.

Sophie Turner was as shocked as anyone. When she met with the company's CEO Ben Lamm, she joked: "I thought they weren't real, so when are the dragons coming?"

Don't give them ideas, Sophie.

Nick's Awkward Situation

Poor Nick Frost might find himself in some uncomfortable conversations if he bumps into JK Rowling on the Harry Potter TV set.

He's playing Hagrid in the HBO adaptation, which is great. But he's also starring in a new comedy called Transaction that... well, let's just say it probably won't be JK's cup of tea given her very public views on trans issues.

The six-part series starts June 24 on ITV2, with Nick playing store manager Simon alongside Jordan Grey's character Liv - described as "a transgender egomaniac" working night shifts in a supermarket.

Talk about timing.

I broke this story last year when Nick was first attached to the project with Jordan, who made her mark on The Voice back in 2016. Should be interesting to see how this all plays out...
