The tragic death of Evelyn Plummer’s dog Cerberus left both Evelyn and viewers bereft tonight.
Viewers know Cerberus ate something off the floor in Roy’s Rolls and has been sick for days but tonight he took a turn for the worse

Rushing the dog to the vet, they told Evelyn that his stomach was swollen and his lymph nodes were presenting a problem.
She was asked to leave him under observation and she headed off to try to take her mind off things.
However in the cafe she was struggling and Roy tried to cheer her up.
But when she told him what was wrong – he realised that he may have been responsible by leaving an uneaten Eccles Cake on the floor.
With currants toxic to dogs, Evelyn realised what was wrong and went to the vets to tell them – but she was in for a devastating news.
“We’ve had the results back from the tests,” the vet explained.
“Unfortunately there are some problems with how his organs are working. Cerberus’s kidneys are not functioning the way they should.
“I’m afraid he is in kidney failure. There are some options available to us but he’s unlikely to improve when we bear in mind the amount of damage to his kidneys.
“We have to think about Cerberus’ quality of life and with his age I think the kindest thing would be to put him to sleep.
“I know this isn’t what you wanted to hear but I’ve consulted with two of my colleagues and this is the humane thing to do.”
Evelyn was utterly bereft and went to say goodbye to her dog.
“Ok,” she said. “I don’t want to see him suffer.”
Kneeling down next to him while the vet readied the injection, she told the Greyhound: “Thank you for being such a good boy.
“The best boy, the best friend. Just sleep my little angel. You are the prince of Weatherfield.”
With that Cerberus slipped away but the heartbreaking scenes left viewers completely traumatised.
One wrote: “This is the only time I’ve cried when they’ve killed off a character.”
A second said: “Poor Cerberus heartbreaking, such a sad story.”
Another added: “Heartbreaking having to put down family pets.”
Later Roy went to visit Evelyn but she told him their friendship died when Cerberus did, leaving him filled with guilt.
