CORONATION Street’s Jane Danson has revealed that Leanne will be “broken and changed forever” after her son Oliver’s tragic death.
The 42-year-old actress, who plays Leanne Battersby in the popular ITV soap, has been involved in a heartbreaking storyline surrounding her youngster’s battle with an incurable form of mitochondrial disease.
The show have confirmed that the tot’s life will come to an end next week after Leanne and Steve decide to turn off his life support machine.
Leanne, who currently works as a works as a PA at Barlow Legal Services, has been fighting a legal battle to stop doctors from turning off her son’s life support.
However, the parents finally agree that it’s time to say their final goodbyes to the ill toddler.
In a recent chat with OK! magazine, the actress explained that the loss of Leanne’s son will change her “forever”.
She said: “This is probably the worst thing that could ever happen to you and I don’t think we can rush that.
“I always knew that this would change her character forever.
“So it will be really interesting for me to see just how far they take that. Because with losing Oliver, Leanne’s broken, she’s just broken.”
The star also wanted to make sure she did the storyline justice and show a true representation of how people deal with such grief.
She added: “We’ve been really conscious that when you lose someone you don’t just go back to normal life overnight.
“Soaps are guilty of that sometimes. People don’t want to see you crying any more, so you are back down the Rovers having a pint.”
With them help from a charity called The Lily Foundation, Jane and the rest of the cast were able to portray the situation in the correct light.
The star praised the organisation for being “amazing”.
And Jane admitted that she’s been praised for her performance by people who have been in a similar situation and is so glad that she’s done it right out of respect for those people.
She told the magazine: “We just hope we’ve told it truthfully.
“I’ve been overwhelmed by the amount of families in this situation who are watching. That’s blown me away.
“People stop me in the street to say the writing and the performances have been really accurate. It’s amazing to hear, but it’s really sobering, as well, because we are just pretending.”
Oliver will say his final goodbyes to the rest of his family during a double bill next week (November 27).
His family will mark the end of his life by singing his favourite song ‘You are my Sunshine’ by his bedside.
When Leanne and Leanne stop singing, it marks the end of Oliver’s life.
