The pair on set filming an exclusive video for Coronation Street’s YouTube channel talking abut online hate

The pair met on set filming an exclusive video for the ITV soap’s YouTube channel talking about their own personal experiences with anti-social media and the emotional damage caused by online hate.

As the pair sit down together in the iconic café, Roy’s Rolls, Amy and Sami discuss what they would say to their internet trolls if they could meet them face to face.

While having a cup of tea, the girls discuss the lows of social media, and the best piece of advice they have been given for tackling keyboard warriors.

The video will be released on the official Coronation Street YouTube channel, today (Tuesday 26th July).

The Coronation Street actress who plays, Maria Windass, has opened up about her own experience of online abuse to help film her latest storyline, which saw Maria become a target of trolling and an online hate campaign after settling into her new role on the local council.

Opening up about her experience, Samia said: “I have experienced trolling in a different way to Maria. but I was really pleased when Coronation Street said they were going to do the trolling storyline, because I think it is a current issue that unfortunately a lot of people have experienced.”

The actress says that she hopes her storyline will help people who are currently experiencing online abuse, adding

“For me personally, if I was watching Maria’s storyline, it would help me realize that I am not alone and that a lot of people go through this. I hope it makes people who might have left those nasty comments think twice about it in the future.”

Former reality television participant, Amy Hart has also been a victim of online abuse, after appearing on ITV2’s hit show Love Island in 2019.

The former Love Island contestant, opened up saying that she was targeted via her own social media, and received regular hate messages in comments, through national forums, and on local Facebook groups in her home town of Worthing.

Amy says she uses her platform to raise awareness about trolling and encourages people not to do it.

In September 2021, Amy gave evidence in Parliament to a committee of MPs investigating influencer culture and examining the lack of social media regulation.

Amy admitted how she has received death threats from children as young as 13 years old.

On her collaboration with Coronation Street, Amy said: “I am a massive Corrie fan, and was delighted to be invited to Coronation Street to talk about this hugely important topic with Samia – who plays one of my favorite characters. Maria. I think it’s imperative that soap operas cover trolling and online bullying issues, as it shows the devastating effects on a mass audience of all ages.

The sad truth is that trolls are all ages, genders and from all walks of life. I should know, as I have been sent abusive and upsetting messages by a whole range of people.

Hopefully this powerful storyline will help break the negative trolling culture, and in turn may even save someone’s life.”
