EASTENDERS’ Chantelle Atkins is going to be able to confide in her mum about her tragic miscarriage.
The hairdresser – who is played by actress Jessica Plummer in the BBC soap – lost her baby earlier this week but has kept it a secret, fearful that the pregnancy was the only thing stopping her abusive husband Gray from beating her.
But as the weeks roll on Chantelle is going to find it impossible to keep her secret and will confide in her mum who tries her best to support her without knowing what Gray is really like.
Earlier this week she began sobbing in the toilet over her loss.
But when Gray came to find her to apologise for ambushing her in the Vic with a pregnancy announcement he saw that she was upset.
Instead of realising why, he thought she was just tearful about him betraying her with the surprise party and told her that the baby was the reason he was trying to change.
Viewers know he has been quietly terrorising Chantelle with beatings and abuse for years behind closed doors.
He told her: “Sorry, I should have asked. It just feels like a new beginning.
“Everything else, we can put it behind us. I bought you that maternity dress. Look, I get it, working, I get that you’re bored but all I care about is you, us.
“I don’t want anything bad to happen to the baby. It’s my chance to show you, to prove to you that I can change.”
Realising that Gray would go back to abusing her if she was without the baby, Chantelle kept quiet about the miscarriage and broke viewers’ hearts.
