EASTENDERS fans are in tears after Whitney Dean received devastating news about her unborn baby.

The market trader – who is played by actress Shona McGarty in the BBC soap – was left heartbroken after learning from doctors there is a problem with her baby.

A doctor warned that her baby could have a genetic condition

Pregnant Shona went for a scan tonight with Kat but faced a long wait.

But as she finally got into the room for a scan, the nurse noticed something was off.

Leaving Whitney with Kat, the nurse went to fetch a doctor to review the scan and find out what was wrong.

And sadly the news was not good.

A doctor emerged and told Whitney: “I’ve reviewed your scans and consulted with some of my colleagues and it appears that some of your baby’s organs are developing on the outside of its body.

“The condition is known as omphalocele, and it can be treated with surgery after the baby is born.

“I know that’s a worry but in these cases it’s helpful for us to offer you a test to check if the omphalocele has been caused by a genetic syndrome or condition.”

She then added the devastating news: “I’m afraid that would be more serious. I’m sorry, in some cases it could mean that your baby might not survive.”

Whitney broke down in tears and fans were with her.

One wrote: “Sat here crying again poor Whitney wish @bbceastenders would give her a break poor love she deserves some happiness, well done to @ShonaBM for playing Whitney so well.”

A second said: “That last scene of Whitney being told her baby might not survive because of the condition it has and kat comforting her was heartbreaking.”

Another added: “Whitney deserves better, she’s waited this long to become a mother and it’s likely her baby will die.”

It has been announced that Whitney’s baby will be diagnosed with Edwards’ Syndrome.

EastEnders is working alongside SOFT UK and Antenatal Results and Choices on the storyline.

Whitney and Zack, played by Shona McGarty and James Farrar, receive the diagnosis later this month when an ultrasound scan identifies a birth defect which prompts further testing.
