EastEnders' Lacey Turner Gets Real About Money Struggles Despite Her BBC Paycheque

God. There's something refreshingly honest about a soap star admitting they're feeling the pinch too. Even with what most of us would consider a dream salary.

I've always had a soft spot for Lacey Turner (Stacey Slater to the millions who've watched her since 2004). Maybe it's because she doesn't seem to have that celebrity ego thing going on. Last week she spoke about how the cost of living crisis is hitting everyone – yes, even those reportedly earning between £150K-£190K annually.

When Your Shopping Bill Suddenly Doubles

As a mum of three little ones – including five-month-old baby Gipsy – Lacey's feeling that supermarket shock we're all experiencing. "I look at my shopping bill and think when did that go up?" she told the press. "What would be a £70 shop suddenly becomes a £120 shop and you go oh my God, I'm not buying them again."

Sounds familiar, right?

My neighbour works at Tesco and told me last month that she's watching customers put items back at teh checkout almost every shift now. People are making those split-second decisions about what they can actually afford. Brutal.

The "Don't Judge Me" Plea

What struck me most was Lacey's point about judgment. "You cannot judge people you don't know, you never know what another person is going through," she said.

Back in 2019, I remember rolling my eyes when celebrities complained about money. Like, seriously? You earn more in a month than I do all year! But then my cousin (who works in finance and makes serious cash) lost everything in a bad investment. Appearances can be deceptive.

Lacey returned to EastEnders just WEEKS after giving birth to film Martin Fowler's exit scenes. That's dedication to the job that pays the bills.

So What's Her Actual Story?

Lacey and her husband Matt Kay are childhood sweethearts who married in Ibiza in 2017. They now have three kids – Dusty (5), Trilby (3), and baby Gipsy who arrived in January. That's a lot of mouths to feed, regardless of your income bracket.

"Ultimately if you strip everything back we're all the same, it doesn't matter what industry you're in," she explained. "You could be a broker, you could be hairdresser, you could be a gardener – we're all facing the same struggles daily."

I mean... is she wrong though?

Motherhood: The Hardest Gig She's Ever Had

Parenting three under six has gotta be intense. Lacey previously described motherhood as "the hardest job I have ever done in my life" but also "the best thing in the world."

I bumped into a friend with twins at the park yesterday. She looked like she hadn't slept in approximately 87 years. When I asked how she was doing, she just laughed and said, "Living the dream... if the dream is permanent exhaustion."

Lacey seems to share that realistic view of parenting. "Somehow we manage to juggle everything and everyone and yet we still feel guilty for certain things," she told The Sun. "I think until you have done it you can't understand how challenging it is yet so rewarding."

The Wealth Gap in Soapland

It's worth noting that while Lacey might be one of the better-paid soap stars, not everyone in the industry is raking it in. There's been reported tension over at Coronation Street because some cast members can supplement their income with brand deals while others can't.

And let's not forget the numerous soap stars who've faced bankruptcy over the years. Being on TV doesn't automatically mean financial security.

Listen. At the end of the day, we're all watching our pennies now, aren't we? From the single parent on benefits to the soap star with the nice house. The difference is just in the details of what we're cutting back on.

Maybe Lacey's right. Maybe we should judge less and understand more.

...Or maybe I'm just getting soft in my old age.
