The lowdown on Kim Medcalf and her return to EastEnders as Sam Mitchell

Speaking to The Mirror, the 56-year-old took a jab at the long-running drama, branding it “out of touch” before claiming she “wasn’t surprised” by the show’s lowest rating in Autumn, 2021 (1.7m viewers compared to around 7m at the time of her exit).

“They need to bring it back down to earth a bit”, Cheryl said, “when the sensational stuff becomes like a movie, it becomes a bit like a blur.”

“Arthur stealing the money, Den and Angie’s divorce papers, those were the hearts and lives of real people. The producers need to go out and talk to people.”

Cheryl added: “If you wanted explosions, you’d watch Fast and Furious.”

She also made a comment about the programme’s lack of diversity, sharing that she would like to see more “big people” on the screens.

“We can identify better when someone looks like you is represented”, she said.

“And we do have sex! People like to pretend that we just laugh around being jolly and eating, but we don’t. I saw Pierce Brosnan’s wife, who’s bigger, and was like ‘Yeah! Goooo on!’.”

Cheryl’s departure from EastEnders was confirmed in September, 2011, by soap bosses.

Since her exit, she has appeared in several TV shows including The Saturday Night Show, Celebrity Big Brother, Your Face Sounds Familiar and Big School.

She has also embarked on a new career.
