THE years of secrecy were too hard to handle for Mary Goskirk as she finally opened up about her sexuality last night.

However, history-savvy Emmerdale viewers were baffled when the character mentioned lesbianism was illegal and corrected her.

But it was Rhona’s attitude which shocked viewers the most

Mary Goskirk remained a mystery since her arrival in the ITV Dales earlier in 2022.

But the character portrayed by former EastEnders star Louise Jameson finally revealed one of her biggest secrets during last night’s instalment of the Yorkshire-based soap when she came out as a lesbian.

She broke the news to her daughter Rhona (played by Zoe Henry) but the secret came as a shock for the Emmerdale vet.

Rhona became very cold with her mother when started to believe her life had been built on lies.

This led to a very tense conversation during which Mary asserted her sexuality was “illegal” back in her day.

Fuming Emmerdale viewers immediately jumped on to Twitter to share their thoughts upon noticing the blunder.

“Emmerdale get your facts right no illegal lesbianism ever”, one of them wrote.

Another reminded soap bosses and followers that being an openly gay mal was illegal: “Actually Emmerdale lesbianism was never illegal for women… it was only us men it was illegal for.”

A third penned: “Lesbianism has never been illegal – however being a male gay sadly was.”

More viewers complained on social media when Rhona’s reaction to Mary’s coming out did not meet their expectations.

As mentioned above, Rhona was anything but accepting and even abruptly told Bear Mary was a lesbian when he walked in the room with buns in hand – without her mother’s consent.

Viewers were quick to call out her hypocrisy as Rhona had a brief relationship with another woman, Vanessa Woodfield, herself before the pair became best friends.

One fan wrote: “I see the writers have screwed up another storyline, Rhona is coming across so two-faced Pot Calling The Kettle Black if you ask me.”

Another added: “How vile is Rhona.. Her mother should be the only person to share her sexuality, when she’s happy to do so. Not be outed by her disgusting daughter like that.”

A third upset viewer jumped in: “Don’t like how outing characters is brushed under the carpet.”

“Charity outed Vanessa and they ended up together while Rhona outed Mary and they finish the episode snuggling up on the bench. Outing someone is a cruel and dangerous thing to do. Shine a light on that.”
