LIAM Cavanagh has gone through troubled years in the Dales with the last blow being the breakdown of his union with Leyla Harding.
Little do Emmerdale residents know their local GP has been keeping a massive secret – and one villager will be finding it out.
Liam has been through the wringer in recent years
His marriage with Leyla Harding broke down
He’s been supportive of Paddy Kirk throughout his mental health ordeal
Last year ended on a sour note for both Liam and Leyla as they called time on their marriage after the wedding planner’s addiction battle.
Throughout the festive season, Liam found some comfort in his friendships in the Dales before locking lips with former fiancée Bernice Blackstock.
However, in recent months, Liam was one of the many male villagers to bring Paddy Kirk support amid his mental health ordeal – and expressed his love for whodunnits during a comical exchange with Bear Wolf.
It may thus come as no surprise that Liam has delved into writing his own murder mysteries, as teased by actor Jonny McPherson during a chat with HOAR and other press.
“Liam, unbeknownst to anyone, is submitting short detective stories”, Jonny explained.
“Obviously, he’s divorced from Leyla and he hasn’t had much else to do so he’s started writing short stories and submitted them to Murder Most Murky which is a bi-annual murder mystery publication.”
The GP is hoping to win the New Crime Writer of the Year award under the pen name Anna Le Monde – a reference to his late daughter Leanna being “his world”, as explained by Jonny.
Unfortunately, his secret is then rumbled by Wendy Posner when she stumbles upon a print out of one of his stories in the surgery – and she has a surprising suggestion for Liam.
“He prints out one of these stories and Wendy finds it in the surgery but then comes over and confronts him about it”, Jonny teased.
“She says ‘what on earth is this ?’ and he’s so embarrassed but Wendy says ‘Liam, these are really good but they could do with a little bit of something else.'”
Much like Liam, Wendy has a hidden passion for storytelling and adds a few finishing touches to Liam’s story by introducing a hint of romance.
“Once Wendy starts talking about some racy stuff, that kind of gets him a bit fired up”, Jonny quipped.
Wendy Posner actress Susan Cookson added: “She’s just a bit suspicious of him for a while, he’s sort of floating about with his laptop and she knows he’s up to something.”
“Then she finds this printout and it’s obviously a bit of a passion of hers, as I’ve recently found out. But she’s into the saucier side of murder mystery short stories, the more romantic side. She introduces that side to his stories and the two of them, it’s a meeting of minds and it’s a share of interest and it is something that’s really good for them.”
This wouldn’t be first secret Liam and Wendy shared as he knows all about the nurse’s chequered past with her former husband Russ.
“They’ve definitely got more in the way of shared interests. Because Leyla, she’s weddings and nails… the cocaine”, Jonny continued while Susan went on: “And Wendy’s very kind. And the empathy… They’ve both lost a child so there’s that.”
But affairs are rife in the eponymous village and the pair’s intimacy will be leading to a shocking surgery romp with Wendy having to cope with her own infidelity the following day.
Will she come clean to her long-term partner Bob Hope?
Or will it be another secret for her to share with Liam?
Emmerdale airs weeknights from 7.30pm on ITV.
