So here's what went down. I turned 40 (gulp) and decided to treat myself to a day of pampering before meeting up with my absolute rock Richard for dinner. I spent hours running around Fulham like a headless chicken trying to sort everything out. My feet are killing me. The stress was unreal, especially with that holiday countdown ticking away in my head.
But you know what? Every single person I encountered while sorting this mess was incredibly kind. The lady at the bank who bent the rules slightly to help me out. The guy at the phone shop who let me use their computer to access my email. Sometimes it takes a mini-disaster to remind you that most people are actually decent humans.

Richard was an absolute saint through all of this. He got me home safely that night, kept me calm when I was on the verge of a meltdown, and even made me laugh about it eventually. He claimed I gave him permission (I didn't), and thankfully his company took it seriously. The whole thing ended up in an employment tribunal when he tried to claim unfair dismissal. The tribunal sided with the company. Thank goodness some workplaces actually take this stuff seriously now.
Between that and now this mugging, I'm starting to wonder if I've accidentally walked under 17 ladders or something.
