When does The Serpent start on BBC One?

The Serpent will begin TONIGHT (January 1) at 9pm.

The six-part drama is about French serial killer Charles Sobhraj, a conman gained infamy for his successful escapes from high-security prisons in the 1970s.

Charles, who earned the chilling nicknames The Bikini Killer and The Serpent, is currently serving a life sentence in Kathmandu prison, Nepal.

The Serpent is written by Ripper Street’s Richard Warlow and Toby Finlay, while it is directed by The Missing’s Tom Shankland.

Billy Howle plays a junior diplomat based at the Dutch Embassy in Bangkok who seeks to bring Sobhraj to justice

What is The Serpent about?

The show begins with Sobhraj, who is the chief suspect in a series of unsolved deaths of young Travellers in Asia.

Sobhraj’s favourite method was to make his victims ill – using anything from diarrhoea-inducing pills to itching powder – before going on to strangle them.

The twisted murderer would then mutilate them with a knife or shoot them before disfiguring the corpses.

Sobhraj is believed to have murdered up to 24 people before he was captured  by international authorities.

But he really made his name by becoming Interpol’s most wanted man after repeatedly slipping from the grasp of authorities.
