ACTRESS Millie Gibson left the cobbles last month in a shock exit.

But why did she quit Coronation Street and when can we next see her on our screens? Here’s everything you need to know.

Actress Mille Gibson played Kelly Neelan on the ITV soap

Why has Millie Gibson quit Corrie?

Amelia Eve Gibson, also known as Millie Gibson, is an English actress.

The young actress was born on June 19, 2004.

She is best known for her role as Kelly Neelan in the ITV soap Coronation Street.

However, her time on the cobbles has now come to an end after she announced she was leaving the show earlier this year.

Her departure from the show came as the young TV star wanted to explore other options in her career.

Speaking on her exit, Millie said: ”I have no responsibilities. I don’t have kids, I don’t have a mortgage to pay or anything like that, I’m still grateful to be living at home.

”So, I thought I’m just going to see what else the world has. If it does, it does – that would be quite good, wouldn’t it?

”I just thought I might as well see what happens while I’m still young.”

While she became a favourite among soap fans since her first appearance in 2019, Kelly suffered a huge amount while in Weatherfield.

Her father Rick was most notably murdered by Gary Windass (played by Mikey North) after terrorising Corrie residents.

She was then involved in a shocking hate crime plot which led to the death of Seb Franklin – a murder she was convicted for.

But new evidence soon emerged, and she was acquitted while the real culprit, Corey Brent, was brought to justice.

Kelly was seen struggling with drugs and living in the rough, but she finally found a safe haven when Imran Habeeb and his then-partner Toyah Battersby took her in.

As they were trying to adopt and build a family together, Kelly had no other choice but to live somewhere else and she found a new home with Maria Connor and her husband Gary Windass.

In more recent months, viewers saw Kelly putting her life back together but her mother’s death from cancer has been particularly hard to handle.

She was also kidnapped and saved by Gary – although appears to slowly become suspicious of his behaviour after watching him almost killing a man.

Who will Millie Gibson play in Doctor Who?

Despite leaving Weatherfield behind, Millie Gibson will once again be back on our TV screens – and this time she will be starring in Doctor Who.

Gibson will appear as Ruby Sunday – the 15th Doctor’s companion, alongside co-star and Sex Education actor Ncuti Gatwa.

Ncuti Gatwa was named the new Doctor earlier this year.

The news of Gibson’s new role was revealed live on Children In Need as the TV actress stepped out of the Tardis.

Speaking on her new role, Gibson said: ”It is a gift of a role, and a dream come true, and I will do everything to try and fill the boots the fellow companions have travelled in before me.

“What better way to do that than being by the fabulous Ncuti Gatwa’s side, I just can’t wait to get started.”

The pair are set to sail the universe as they take on their new roles in 2023.

What happened to Kelly Neelan?

In September 2022, Kelly’s exit left soap fans in shock as she left Weatherfield alive after the horror shooting.

During her final scenes, viewers saw Kelly hire a gangster named Kieron to kill Gary Windass.

However, her plan didn’t play out as she hoped as she was betrayed and he planned to set her up for the murder.

As viewers watched in suspense, Kelly was taken to an old mill and forced to climb up onto the ledge.

As Kieron tried to force her to jump under the threat of being shot, Gary appeared and begged Kieron to kill him and let Kelly go free.

But Kieron refused and decided to shoot Kelly.

As the gunman pulled the trigger, Aadi appeared and hurled himself in front of the gun and as a result, got shot.

Kieron then tried to shoot Kelly, but the gun jammed, leaving the police enough time to get to them as Kieron made his escape.

Kelly and Gary then rushed to hospital with Aadi, who was fine, and it was then Kelly made the decision to leave him behind in Weatherfield and start a new life alone.

What other TV shows has Millie been in?

With her time in Corrie over, Millie will now take on her next TV role in Doctor Who.

Two years before her Coronation Street debut, she appeared in one episode of the BBC One drama series Love, Lies and Records as a character called Mia.

In 2018, she was then seen in three episodes of the mini-series Butterfly, which aired on ITV.

The show focused on a trans girl called Maxine Duffy who was coming to terms with her gender identity.

Millie slipped into the skin of Maxine’s sister Lily who, initially, looks out for her in school before feeling increasingly unloved as Maxine becomes the main focus of all the attention.
