IN February 2022, Rockstar Games announced the upcoming game we’ve all been waiting for, GTA 6.

The newest game in the Grand Theft Auto series has been long anticipated by fans, as the series’ last instalment is almost a decade old.

GTA Online has a stellar line up of cars that we could see in the new game.

Thanks to leaks and official announcements, there are a few things we already know about the game, and there are big changes for long-time GTA fans.

Here’s everything we know about the upcoming GTA 6.

When will GTA 6 release?

No official release date has been given for GTA 6, but the team has said that the game is about three years into development.

Rockstar said it will reveal more information soon which could include a vague seasonal release date.

Rockstar has confirmed that the latest leaks won’t delay GTA 6’s release.

From looking at previous releases and how far along the game is, we’re expecting the earliest possible release to be around the 2024 holiday period.

Some have even suggested that we won’t see the game until 2026, which is another possibility.

What is the setting for GTA 6?

We’re returning to Vice City.

Rockstar has not officially revealed the setting for GTA 6, but rumours started spreading after publisher Take Two started removing popular mods of one map.

Fan favourite location, Vice City, has received a number of upgrades over the years thanks to the modding community.

Take Two started issuing takedown notices for these maps this year, making people believe that Rockstar was creating something in this setting.

In September, a hacker managed to illegally download almost a hundred early clips of the game.

These videos, which are confirmed to be real, back up the rumours, suggesting the game will take place in Rockstar’s fictional version of Miami.

However, while the 2002 Vice City game took place in the ‘80s, GTA 6 looks more like the modern day.

Other locations were also shown, including a swamp, and some familiar locations such as the Malibu Club and Ocean View Hotel.

Does GTA 6 have a female protagonist?

This is the first time you will be able to play as a woman in a GTA game.

Rumours about this have been around since Rockstar announced that GTA 6 was in development.

Leaks suggested that the upcoming game would feature dual protagonists – a man and a woman – in a modern take on Bonnie and Clyde.

The footage seems to confirm this. The game appears to have dual protagonists called Lucia and Jason. We saw both characters in the footage.

Bonnie and Clyde are also mentioned in the logs, making it seem that they are who the duo are based on.

The leaks showed the pair robbing a diner and holding up the cashier in true criminal couple fashion.

What weapons are available in GTA 6?

Many of GTA V’s weapons return.

Currently, the combat appears similar to GTA 5, but as it is still in early development, Rockstar will likely beef up the arsenal.

Melee weapons are back such as the golf club, crowbar, and baseball bat.

An assault rifle, sniper rifle, shotgun, rocket launcher, and pistol were also all seen in the leaked footage.

Some think there may be dual-wielding in the upcoming game, as Lucia could be seen holding a weapon in either hand, which would be a first for the series.

It also looks like weapons like long rifles and pistols will be visible on the player character, similar to the weapon systems in Red Dead Redemption 2.

There may also be holdable health packs, allowing players to heal or buff themselves mid-combat.

We also saw a player lean out of a car and shoot at all angles.

Will GTA 6 have character customisation?

GTA Online let’s you customise your character.

While full character customisation doesn’t seem to be implemented so far, it appears there are ways you can change up your character.

Throughout the footage, Lucia appeared with different clothes and hairstyles, making it seem like these are changeable options for players.

Competitor Saints Row is known for its deep character customisation, but it doesn’t seem that Rockstar will be taking the create-your-own character route with the new game.

What is the humour like in GTA 6?

The series is known for controversial humour.

Rockstar has claimed that it will be stepping away from some of the more bigotted language and jokes that have been featured in GTA in the past.

While the leaks didn’t confirm this, we did see a different type of humour compared to previous titles.

There was a lot of referential humour, with plenty of Easter Eggs available for long-running fans of the series.

We also saw a Facebook parody, complete with its own uncanny valley version of Mark Zuckerberg.
