Metro games in order: By release date and timeline

Metro 2033

METRO is based on the books written by Dmitry Glukhovsky, which are about the post-apocalyptic Moscow metro system which is home to the last survivors on Earth.

This is the list Metro games released by 4A Games and the timeline that they follow.

Metro 2033

Platforms: PC, Xbox 360, Xbox One, PlayStation 4, OS X, Linux, Nintendo Switch

Released on March 16, 2010, Metro 2033 presents Artyom, one of the last survivors on Earth.

Living in the underground metro system, Artyom is trying to find other survivors to try and get out of the hell that is living in underground.

The above ground cannot be walked on because it is hazardous following a nuclear war.

As he goes through tunnels to hopefully find somewhere better, he has to fight it our everyday against mutants, with the hopes that he’ll find someone to help him out.

Metro 2033 is the first release of the Metro franchise

Metro: Last Light

Platforms: PC, Xbox 360, Xbox One, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch

The game released on May 14, 2013 sees Artyom become a Ranger and his mission is to protect his home station.

It is very similar to Metro 2033, but it has added features such as a weapon customisation system.

It also included more side quests and weapons and it could be expanded into another into the Chronicles Pack which would offer the player three more missions and more insight into the metro world that Artyom ended living in.

Metro: Redux

Platforms: PC, Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch

Metro Redux was a remake of both Metro 2033 and Metro: Last Light, released on August 26, 2014.

It had improvements to the features in both games and made the Metro 2033 engine look the same as the one in Metro: Last Night.

This was appreciated as a “complete package” of both games which gave way to better combat, enhances graphics, improved game modes and higher resolution support.

Metro Exodus

Platforms: Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Microsoft Windows, Google Stadia

Metro Exodus was released on February 15, 2019, and it is the latest addition to the franchise.

The game follows up from the other editions and it takes place in 2035 and this time it goes further than the tunnels and underground metro system.

It visits various locations in Moscow, Russia as he escapes the metro system with allies on the locomotive Aurora, and head far east where he fights more mutants, robbers and formed cults.

During the first week of its release, it sold 200,000 copies on Steam and also received nominations for Game of the Year and Best Storytelling in 2019.

Metro timeline order

Metro follows a timeline set in the future and it is all fictional.

This is the full timeline order of the game:

  • Metro 2033 – This game covers eight days in 2033.
  • Metro: Last Light – This game takes place in 2034, some time after May 10
  • Metro Exodus – Takes place in 2035

Will there be a Metro 2033 film?

Dmitriy Glukhovskiy will also be writing the adaption of the book to the film, after he also helped out 4A Games to develop the game.

The film was set to start filming in 2020, but the Covid-19 pandemic got in the way and now it has to deal with Russia-Ukrainian conflict too.

The release dates is set for 2024 so far but there is no confirmation on who will be taking part in it.
