Fans were stunned that the American rock guitarist, who is best known as the lead guitarist of the rock band Bon Jovi from 1983 to 2013, was hiding behind the mask.

One wrote: “I can’t believe Bon Jovi’s guitarist was in the costume!”

Another posted: “I was right all along, I knew it was Richie Sambora.”

Davina McCall was correct with her guess and admitted she had “goosebumps”.

Host Joel Dommett listed off a number of clues that the singer-songwriter had shared throughout his time on the show, including lyrics “shot through the heart” and “halfway there” and the title of his studio album 7800° Fahrenheit.

Richie said about his costume: “It took a little getting used to, but once I put it on that was it.

“It’s a wild reality doing this show – It’s been a lot of fun, I’d figure we’d fool some people.”

The show kicked off with Jellyfish as the first character to make a splash on the stage.

In the VT the masked star can be seen with a glitter ball and the mystery clue was ”spangle”.

Rita Ora was convinced she recognised Jellyfish’s voice – but she couldn’t remember who it was.

Jonathan Ross thought it was Glee star Amber Riley, Rita went for singing superstar Jennifer Hudson, Mo Gilligan guessed 80s songstress Chaka Khan and Davina had gone for Alesha Dixon.

While guest star Peter Crouch guessed Lea Michell.

Hoping to bring the heat next was Jacket Potato – but left fans confused with the clue “billions”, with the judges unsure whether it referred to money.

While doe eyed star Fawn was back and the judges were in awe of their beautiful rendition of Tomorrow.

Peter guessed classical pianist Myleene Klass.

The clue was platinum and the judges think it referred to albums.

Next up was Phoenix and Mo in particular loved the song choice which in his words is a tune.

Lastly Rhino took to the stage, with a number of guesses including James Arthur, Busted star Charlie Simpson and Mo guessing Robbie Williams.
