BRITAIN is braced to be battered by “severe” gales of up to 55mph as wind and rain sweeps across the Atlantic at the end of the week.
The Met Office said wet and windy weather coming in from North America will see “heavier rain and strong winds” lash parts of the country.

The storms are not expected to be remnants of Hurricane Fiona, which has devastated Canada and Cuba and is expected to hit the US soon.
Instead the cause is likely to be the Atlantic jet stream carrying stormy weather our way.
Parts of the UK could see highs of 17C on Friday, but the wet weather will rapidly spread eastwards over the weekend.
Glasgow is predicted 14C while Belfast could see 15C.
However, Met Office meteorologist Anne Shuttleworth reassured Brits that the impact of the conditions is expected to be limited.
She emphasised that the forecast was not unusual for this time of year.
She said: “The strongest winds will affect north-western Scotland and Northern Ireland where severe gales are possible, up to 55mph, during Friday morning and afternoon.
“There will also be strong winds along the south coast on Friday afternoon and evening, where there is a chance of gales, for a short period of time.”
Her forecast also predicted a “strong Atlantic jet stream” which would “push a deep area of low pressure across the Atlantic that will bring a spell of rain to the UK on Friday with some strong winds following”.
“It is likely to bring some of the heaviest rain and strongest winds we’ve seen so far this autumn.”
Saturday is also predicted to be “unsettled” with rainfall strongest in the South.
However, by Sunday dry weather is likely to return and conditions across the country are set to calm down.
