BRITS are set to enjoy a 19C Indian Summer this week thanks to a sub-tropical plume before being battered by heavy showers.

A plume of hot air from Africa has seen temperatures rise in a run of warmer weather this week.

Brits will enjoy sunny highs of 19C this week thanks to an Indian Summer

The weather is unseasonably warm for October

But Brits will be battered for heavy showers later this week

Those in London could see highs of 19C by Thursday lunchtime despite being well into October.

While Brits in Manchester and Cardiff will also bask in excellent weather with highs of 18C and 17C respectively.

An ‘Indian Summer‘ means a period of unseasonably warm, dry and calm weather which can make for an Autumnal heatwave.

Today’s weather forecast according to the Met Office reads: “A few showers in the south and west today, else a good deal of dry weather with sunny spells.

“Turning cloudier with outbreaks of rain across southwestern areas later.”

It adds: “Many places will be mild and bright this afternoon and it will feel unseasonably warm in any sunny spells.”

A number of flood alerts do remain in place today following recent downpours, with river levels now reaching their peak as rain water continues to drain.

But the UK will remain warm – with humid conditions set to linger on.

The UK has been experiencing temperatures much warmer than usual for this time of year – and that’s set to continue.

A Met Office statement said: “It’s been a mild October so far and this week will remain unseasonably warm.

“A trough in the jet stream keeps low pressure anchored to the west of the UK and maintains southerly winds, allowing temperatures to reach the low 20s Celsius in places.”

But Brits will be hit by heavy rain as the week goes on according to the weather agency.

There will be some showers on Wednesday as clouds move in a north-easterly direction after arriving in the southeast.

And the same weather front will bring more isolated showers in some areas on Thursday.

However, the end of the week will be even wetter with another wave of heavy rain across the south and southeast lasting into the weekend.

The mercury has soared to 30C on several occasions during the last week of the month.

October’s highest temperature ever recorded in the UK was 29.4C in the small market town of March, Cambridgeshire, on the first day of the month in 1985.
