Lidl is in talks to acquire Wilko sites as part of its expansion

Another major supermarket is considering taking over Wilko stores as part of its expansion strategy. Lidl has revealed that its property team is in close contact with Wilko's administrator to discuss the possibility of acquiring some of its old sites. Although nothing has been confirmed yet, Lidl has expressed interest in properties that meet its requirements.

Aldi also shows interest in Wilko stores

Aldi has previously announced its plans to potentially take over a number of Wilko stores. The UK and Ireland chief executive of Aldi, Giles Hurley, said that the company could rescue branches as part of its own expansion target of opening 1,500 stores. Aldi has encouraged Wilko staff to apply for its current vacancies.

Wilko's current situation

Wilko recently entered administration, putting its 400 stores and 12,000 jobs at risk. The company has already closed 28 shops, with another 24 set to close this week and a further 124 next week. However, administrators have agreed to sell the retailer's brand name to The Range in a £5 million deal. Poundland has also stepped in to purchase 71 Wilko stores.
