Four of the UK's largest banks are set to close more than a dozen branches in the coming days. Thousands of customers of Barclays, HSBC, Halifax, and Lloyds Bank will lose access to their local branch services as the banks continue to shift their focus online.

Keeping Track of Closures

LINK, the largest cash machine network in the UK, monitors and publishes data on planned branch closures across the country. The information is available to customers who want to stay informed about any upcoming closures near them.

Barclays, HSBC, Halifax, and Lloyds Closures

Barclays is set to permanently close branches in 10 different locations before the end of next week. HSBC will also shut down five branches for good in the same period. Additionally, Halifax and Lloyds Banks will each close one branch.

Impact on Customers

The closures will have a significant impact on many customers, particularly the elderly, who rely on in-person banking services. Accessing basic banking tasks such as withdrawing cash or making deposits will become more challenging for this demographic.

Alternative Options for Customers

Affected customers still have alternative ways to access basic banking services without having to travel to the next town. The Post Office's branch network, which has 11,635 locations across the UK, allows customers to perform basic banking tasks. However, new account openings, personal loans, and mortgages cannot be handled at Post Office branches.

Some banks also offer mobile banking services. These services involve a bus that brings the necessary banking facilities to local areas. Customers can call their bank to inquire about banking bus schedules and locations. Village halls or libraries may also be used as alternative locations for mobile banking services.

Banking hubs, which provide shared services, have been set up in four locations across the UK to bridge the gap caused by branch closures. Plans are in place to open dozens more hubs, and LINK has announced eight new hub locations to be established in the coming months.
