The Details

The Department for Work and Pensions has confirmed the dates for the second installment of the £900 cost of living payment.

Households on certain benefits, including Universal Credit, will receive a £300 payment directly into their bank accounts between October 31 and November 19.

The payment will be made automatically, so eligible individuals do not need to take any action.

Qualifying Benefits

To be eligible for the payment, individuals must have been entitled to any of the following benefits between August 18 and September 17:

  • Universal Credit
  • Income-based jobseekers allowance
  • Income-related employment and support allowance
  • Income support
  • Working tax credit
  • Child tax credit
  • Pension credit

If someone was found to be entitled to any of these benefits between the same dates, they will also be eligible for the payment.

Payment Dates for Different Groups

Households on tax credits only will receive their payment from HMRC between November 10 and 19, to ensure they do not receive the payment twice.

The payment reference for bank accounts will be the recipient's National Insurance number followed by DWP COL or HMRC COLS.

Support Scheme

The £300 payment is the second of three payments forming the £900 support scheme.

The first installment of £301 was paid out to over eight million households earlier this year.

The final £299 payment will be made in the spring of 2024.

Government Responses

Mel Stride, secretary of state for work and pensions, stated that this payment is meant to cushion the most vulnerable households from high prices, as the government works to address inflation.

Chancellor of the exchequer, Jeremy Hunt, emphasized the importance of helping the most vulnerable in society.

Encouraging Low-Income Pensioners

The DWP is urging low-income pensioners who are not already receiving pension credit to check their eligibility.

Pension credit claims can be backdated by up to three months, which means more individuals could qualify for both the second cost of living payment and the third payment in the spring.
