Logistics Firm Employees Reject Pay Offer
Pubs across the UK could face beer shortages this Christmas season as draymen and warehouse staff at logistics firm GXO vote to go on strike over pay. The workers, who deliver for brewer and pub giant Greene King, have rejected a four per cent pay offer, leading to concerns of potential disruptions in the lead-up to the festive season.
Union Demands Fair Pay
Union Unite has criticized the pay increase offer, stating that it falls well below inflation and amounts to a real terms pay cut. Unite general secretary Sharon Graham called on both Greene King and GXO, which are described as wealthy companies, to make a fair pay offer to their employees. The union pledged its full support to the striking workers.
Impact on Greene King Pubs
Greene King has stated that the affected depot in Runcorn, Cheshire, supplies less than ten percent of its pubs. The company has contingency plans in place to ensure that its other depots can deliver to those pubs. However, the strike action could still result in disruptions and potential beer shortages this Christmas.
Call for Decent Wages
Unite regional officer John McColl urged Greene King to ensure that its contractors pay a decent wage to their workers. He warned that failure to do so could lead to further industrial action and pubs running dry of their beer during the holiday season.
