Meet the Urban Forager

A savvy saver has shared his secret to living off just £5 a week by foraging for food in city parks and streets. Christian Amys, known as the "urban forager," has made a hobby out of finding seafood and wild mushrooms in Brighton. Since the first Covid-19 lockdown, the 41-year-old has dedicated himself to foraging and estimates that half of his diet comes from his findings in the wild.

From Chef to Forager

Christian, who used to work as a chef, decided to quit his job in March 2020 to focus entirely on foraging. He has replaced most of his diet with mushrooms, preferring them over meat. Christian and his friends even managed to avoid a shortage of leeks last year by foraging in his mate's garden. He believes that foraging not only saves money but also contributes to living a sustainable life.

Tips and Recommendations

While Christian encourages others to try foraging, he also offers some advice. He warns against picking food from busy roads, as they can absorb exhaust fumes. It's important to be cautious and only eat something if you're certain of what it is. Christian now runs workshops through his company Urban Forage, sharing recipes and teaching people about edible seaweeds and other wild plants.

Join the Foraging Movement

Christian is not the only one embracing the trend of foraging. Another family in Greater Manchester spends just £5 a week on supermarket groceries, while a TikToker has gained popularity for "Glamour Diving," which involves finding high-end beauty products in bins. With the right knowledge and a little adventure, anyone can join the foraging movement and save money while enjoying nature's bounty.
