Introduction

Panettone has long been a staple during the festive season, with many opting for this sweet Italian cake over traditional Christmas puddings. We tested a variety of classic panettones from different supermarkets to find out which one offers the best taste and value for money.

The Contenders

Our tester, Lynsey Hope, tried panettones from Sainsbury's, Tesco, Waitrose, M&S, Morrisons, Asda, Aldi, and Lidl.

The Results

Sainsbury's Classic Panettone

Price: £4.50 | Taste: 9/10 | Value: 10/10 | Overall score: 9/10

Sainsbury's offering impressed with its light and fluffy texture and generous amount of candied fruit. Despite a slightly bitter taste to the fruit, the panettone was considered excellent value for money.

Tesco Finest Authentic Panettone (750g)

Price: £10 | Taste: 4/10 | Value: 4/10 | Overall score: 4/10

While Tesco's panettone had a dry texture and a slightly bitter fruit taste, it fell short in terms of taste and value compared to other options on the market.

Waitrose Christmas Classic Panettone (750g)

Price: £12 | Taste: 7/10 | Value: 6/10 | Overall score: 7/10

Waitrose's panettone had a light and airy bread, but lacked in citrus peel and raisins. The higher price point made this option less desirable for our tester.

M&S Classic Panettone (750g)

Price: £12 | Taste: 10/10 | Value: 7/10 | Overall score: 9/10

Made in Italy, M&S's panettone stood out with its abundance of candied peel and sultanas embedded in the soft bread. While pricier, the taste was exceptional.

Morrisons The Best Classic Fruit Panettone (750g)

Price: £7.50 | Taste: 9/10 | Value: 8/10 | Overall score: 8/10

Morrisons' panettone received high praise for its size, shape, aroma, and generous amount of fruit. At a great price, our tester regretted not getting more.

Asda Extra Special Classic Panettone (500g)

Price: £6 | Taste: 9/10 | Value: 9/10 | Overall score: 9/10

Despite being slightly less moist than others, Asda's panettone impressed with its light and fluffy texture and generous amount of candied orange peel and fruit. A great value option.

Aldi Specially Selected Classic Panettone (500g)

Price: £3.49 | Taste: 10/10 | Value: 10/10 | Overall score: 10/10

Aldi's panettone was hailed as a top choice for its quality and price. Cheaper than other supermarket options, it had the perfect balance of peel and fruit, making it a must-buy.

Lidl Deluxe Panettone Classico (750g)

Price: £4.49 | Taste: 5/10 | Value: 7/10 | Overall score: 6/10

Lidl's panettone was the most affordable but fell short in terms of taste. While it had a good texture and plenty of raisins, it lacked the classic citrus flavor.

Conclusion

If you're looking for the perfect panettone this holiday season, Aldi's Specially Selected Classic Panettone is the clear winner in terms of taste and value for money. However, if you're willing to spend a bit more, M&S's Classic Panettone offers an exceptional taste experience. Happy feasting!
