Who is Alejandro Mayorkas?

Alejandro Mayorkas is an American lawyer and politician who currently serves as the Secretary of Homeland Security under President Joe Biden. Prior to this role, Mayorkas led the U.S. Department of Justice's Criminal Division during the Obama Administration.

Early Life and Career

Born in Havana, Cuba on November 24, 1959, Mayorkas and his family fled the country in August 1960 and settled in Miami, Florida. They eventually moved to Los Angeles, California, where Mayorkas spent his formative years in Beverly Hills.

After graduating from the University of California, Berkeley and Loyola Law School, Mayorkas became an Assistant U.S. Attorney for the Central District of California. In 1998, he was appointed as the U.S. Attorney for the same district by President Bill Clinton.

Service Under Obama and Biden

In 2009, Mayorkas was appointed as the director of Citizenship and Immigration Services for the Obama Administration. He served in this role until the end of Obama's presidency. On November 23, 2020, President Joe Biden nominated Mayorkas to be his Secretary of Homeland Security. He was officially sworn into the position on February 2, 2021, making him the first Latino immigrant to hold this title.

Personal Life

Mayorkas is married to Tanya and they have two daughters together, Amelia and Giselle.

Impeachment Efforts and Response

In November 2023, Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene pushed for the impeachment of Mayorkas, accusing him of "high crimes and misdemeanors" related to his conduct at the U.S. and Mexican border. However, the White House blocked Greene's resolution. The Department of Homeland Security defended Mayorkas, stating that he has been working to keep Americans safe and calling for Congress to focus on necessary reforms to the immigration system.
