Increasing Problem
The Houses of Parliament has been grappling with a persistent and expensive infestation of mice and moths, resulting in a hefty bill of over £450,000 for taxpayers. The figures reveal that the funds allocated to pest control have been steadily rising, from £109,563 in 2020/21 to £126,162 in 2022/23.
Infestation Statistics
Last year, there were a staggering 348 instances of mice, 61 cases of moths, and 33 related to flies. In 2023/24 alone, parliamentary authorities have already spent £102,850 to combat the issue. Over the past year, the iconic parliamentary building has become a battleground, with a total of 549 pest control instances reported, including 348 for mice, 61 for moths, and 33 for flies.
Threat to Historic Furnishings
While mice and flies pose health risks to humans, there are additional concerns about the potential damage caused by moths to the historic furnishings and textiles in the building. The number of moth infestations has more than doubled in just two years, with 27 reported cases in 2021. Currently, there are 751 moth monitoring devices installed across the estate.
Raising Questions
These figures, revealed in response to parliamentary questions by Lib Dem frontbencher Sarah Olney, raise questions about the state of British democracy. Ms. Olney remarks that the Palace of Westminster is the heart of British democracy, and it is crucial to take action to protect its historical items and ensure that Parliament remains a safe and clean place to work.
Parliament's Response
A spokesperson for Parliament emphasized that the institution is committed to maintaining a humane and ethical pest control program, focused on preventative measures and the use of various control methods. While the costs have increased due to inflation and additional building work on the estate, value for money remains a priority, and all regulatory obligations are being followed.
