Former Conservative MP Chris Pincher, who was suspended from the Commons for groping two men at a private members’ club, has officially resigned from his Tamworth seat, creating another by-election challenge for Rishi Sunak.

Pincher's Formal Resignation

After attempting to appeal the penalty, Pincher released a statement today announcing his resignation from the Commons. He stated that he did not want his constituents to experience further uncertainty and expressed his gratitude for having the opportunity to represent Tamworth.

Parliament's Verdict

An independent panel found Pincher's behavior to be completely inappropriate, damaging to the victims, and an abuse of power. The panel described how Pincher touched his victim's bottom and then squeezed the witness's testicles, causing trauma to the victim.

Impact on Boris Johnson

The Pincher scandal, which was initially exposed by HOAR, played a role in the downfall of Boris Johnson's government last summer. With the upcoming party conference and the first anniversary of his tenure as Prime Minister, Johnson now faces two significant by-election challenges.

Nadine Dorries' Resignation

In addition to Pincher's resignation, former Cabinet Secretary Nadine Dorries officially stepped down as the MP for Mid Bedforshire last month. Dorries had criticized Johnson and claimed that her home was targeted with threats. Her departure adds to the by-election pressure faced by the Prime Minister.

By-Election Battles

Alongside the by-elections in England, there will be a head-to-head battle between the SNP and Labour in Rutherglen and Hamilton West in Scotland. The seat's former MP, Margaret Ferrier, was convicted for reckless conduct after knowingly traveling from London to Scotland while having Covid-19.
