Members of Parliament (MPs) in the UK are taking additional security measures for Remembrance Sunday events due to concerns over harassment and attacks related to the conflict in Palestine, according to HOAR on Sunday.

MPs Facing Abuse and Mosque Visitation Blockades

Politicians have been subjected to a barrage of abuse and have been prevented from visiting mosques as a result of the ongoing political fallout from the war in Gaza.

As a result of these escalating tensions, several MPs have approached parliamentary authorities to request extra security during wreath-laying ceremonies in their respective areas.

Security Concerns on Remembrance Sunday

One MP expressed the need for enhanced security, saying, "Many of us have had threats to our security. I certainly have. Sadly I see no alternative. I’ll be having security. It’s the one time when people absolutely know where we’re going to be. It’s sad and worrying but it is what it is."

Another MP shared similar sentiments, stating, "In view of recent events, I am seriously considering extra security this year, but it pains me that in this decent free country of respect I have to even consider it. These people have shown they have no respect for our culture or our most solemn events; they will see only an opportunity to advance their cause."

Controversial Pro-Palestine Demonstration

The heightened security concerns coincide with a heated debate surrounding a planned pro-Palestine demonstration scheduled to take place in London on Armistice Day.

Both Rishi Sunak and Home Secretary Suella Braverman have criticized the "disrespectful" nature of the planned demonstration.

The Metropolitan Police is currently deliberating whether to request the march's cancellation, a highly unusual step. If the request is made, the Home Secretary is expected to approve it.

History of Violence Against MPs

Recent years have seen several MPs murdered while performing their official duties. In October 2021, Conservative MP Sir David Amess was fatally stabbed at a constituency surgery in a church hall. Just five years earlier, in June 2016, Labour MP Jo Cox was murdered while on her way to meet constituents at a local library. She was shot and stabbed by a fascist named Thomas Mair.
