Government Considers Axing Green Targets on Boiler Producers

The net zero boiler tax, which threatened to increase bills by £120 for struggling Brits, is likely to be scrapped. Energy Secretary Claire Coutinho is exploring the possibility of removing the green targets imposed on boiler manufacturers, which aimed to promote the use of eco-friendly heat pumps.

Fines for Non-compliance

Starting from April, manufacturers would have been required to replace four percent of their gas boiler sales with electric alternatives. Failure to meet this target would result in fines of £3,000 for each installation that fell short. These penalties would have ultimately been passed on to consumers through higher prices.

Possible Climbdown on Targets

Although no final decision has been made, a source from the Government indicated that a climbdown on the targets is being considered. However, this would only happen if the industry agrees to halt price hikes immediately. Energy Secretary Coutinho is scheduled to meet with industry leaders in the coming weeks to discuss the matter.

Prioritizing Support for Families

The Government source emphasized the need to support hardworking families instead of burdening them with additional costs and mandatory changes. The Boiler Uplift Scheme, described as one of the most generous in Europe, was introduced to provide assistance to households.
