Rishi Sunak's Plan to Get Brits Back to Work

Rishi Sunak is set to tackle the UK's 'sick note culture' by revamping the benefits system. The focus will shift towards supporting individuals to return to work, with health and work professionals taking the lead over GPs.

Addressing Long-Term Sickness Figures

The goal is to provide easier and faster access to specialists to reduce the record number of 2.83 million people on long-term sickness benefits. A review of the 'fit note' system will be conducted after GPs issued 11 million last year, with 94% deeming recipients 'not fit for work'.

Changing the Narrative

PM Sunak emphasizes the need to shift the default focus from what individuals can't do to what work they can do. Welfare Secretary Mel Stride has also highlighted the importance of not labeling normal life challenges as medical conditions that hinder work.

Promoting Mental Health Awareness

Sunak acknowledges the progress in openly discussing mental health issues and stresses the benefits of good work on both mental and physical health. The aim is to help individuals get back to work and avoid over-medicalizing everyday challenges.
