Union bosses call for work-life balance
The call for a four-day work week on full pay was made by union bosses on behalf of their members. They argue that this change could lead to improved productivity and a better work-life balance.
Mark Serwotka, General Secretary of the Public and Commercial Services Union, stated, "If Defra wants to seriously address employee burnout, stress, and poor wellbeing, they will listen to our members and implement this pilot."
Government rejects the demand
Prime Minister Rishi Sunak's spokesperson quickly rejected the demand, stating that there are no plans to grant it. Downing Street emphasized the importance of making the best use of time throughout the entire working week.
Conor Holohan from the TaxPayers' Alliance criticized the demand, saying, "Taxpayers are sick of seeing jumped-up bureaucrats placing their own interests above those of the country. Civil servants receive pay, perks, and a pension that many workers can only dream of, yet some are now demanding a part-time job with full-time pay."
