Overwhelming numbers

The influx of small boat migrants to Britain since 2018 has exceeded the population of Dover, with a total of 116,577 individuals arriving on dinghies, according to Home Office statistics. This figure surpasses the 116,400 residents of the Channel port.

Political reactions

Labour's Shadow Immigration Minister, Stephen Kinnock, criticized the Conservative government for failing to address the issue, allowing criminal smuggling gangs to flourish along the coast. Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has pledged to tackle the situation, but his plan to deport many migrants to Rwanda has faced legal challenges and parliamentary scrutiny.

Government stance

Despite criticism, the Government maintains that it is taking action to combat criminal gangs facilitating these dangerous journeys. A Home Office spokesperson highlighted a 36 per cent reduction in crossings last year due to crackdowns on smuggling operations, preventing over 26,000 attempted crossings.
