Failure of Multiculturalism

During the third day of the Tory Conference in Manchester, Home Secretary Suella Braverman reinforced her belief that multiculturalism has failed in Britain. She raised concerns about certain migrant communities living in various towns and cities across the UK, stating that they are not learning English and refusing to adopt British values.

Parallel Lives

Braverman expressed concern over migrant communities that she believes are living parallel lives, separate from mainstream British society. She criticized their failure to learn English, adopt British values, and actively participate in British life. The Home Secretary emphasized the importance of identifying these issues and speaking out against them without fear.

A Historical Perspective

The concept of "parallel lives" was first introduced in a Home Office report in the early 2000s by Ted Cantle. This report highlighted the existence of separate educational arrangements, community structures, employment opportunities, places of worship, and social networks that prevent meaningful interaction and integration among communities.

Concerns Raised by Tory MPs

During yesterday's conference, a group of right-wing Tory MPs delivered a fiery speech denouncing high levels of migration. Tory MP Tom Hunt argued that it is not xenophobic to express a desire for local town centers to feel more familiar and less like foreign countries.

Plans for the Future

Braverman is set to further emphasize her stance on high levels of immigration in her conference speech. She is expected to announce a lifetime ban on sex offenders changing their name and gender. Additionally, the Home Secretary will introduce a new law that outrightly prohibits individuals convicted of sex-related crimes from changing their identity.
