CORONATION Street fans are devastated for Abi Franklin after she was told she may not be allowed to take her son home.

The mechanic – who is played by actress Sally Carman in the ITV soap – had no idea she was pregnant before she went into labour while high on drugs.

Coronation Street fans were left heartbroken for Abi Franklin during tonight’s episode
A social worker told her she couldn’t see her son

She abandoned her baby at the hospital and a public appeal was issued.

In tonight’s episode nurse Aggie Bailey worked out Abi was the mother and tried to convince her to go to hospital.

In the end it took Abi trying to report her dealer to the police and having to drive out of a locked garage while heavily bleeding for an ambulance to come and save her life.

She was suffering from complications from the birth and was minutes from death.

And in hospital she was convinced to fight for her son.

But when Abi was preparing to be reunited with her son, her hopes were dashed by a social worker.

The social worker told her: “Before you meet your son it’s important for me to manage your expectations.

“I need you to understand that it could be a long and difficult road if you want to be a part of his life. Abi you gave birth under the influence of narcotics.

“The police are waiting to question you about your involvement in the theft of a car. You have a long history of drug and alcohol addiction.

“And you’ve already lost the care of two children. We need to assess whether that’s the right outcome for your son too, which could take weeks, maybe months.

“You can see him while he’s in hospital if that’s what you want but I need to make you aware that depending on the outcome of our assessment that you may not be able to take him home.”

Devastated Abi begged: “You can’t do that to me.

“I made a mistake – I didn’t know I was pregnant or I would have never got high.

“Just tell me what you want me to do and I’ll do it.”

The social worker insisted they needed to be sure she wouldn’t abandon the child again.

She told Abi she would have to enrol in a rehab programme and involve the father to show she’s stable and has support.

It was too much for Abi and she told the social worker she didn’t want her son anymore before breaking down.

Viewers are heartbroken for her.
