Richard Franklin, known for his role as Captain Mike Yates in Doctor Who, has sadly passed away at the age of 87. The news was announced by Líam Rudden on his official X account, stating that Franklin died peacefully in his sleep on Christmas morning.

Franklin's time on Doctor Who from 1971 to 1974 made him a familiar face to fans of the show. However, he also had a diverse career, taking on various roles on both television and in Doctor Who spin-off media. Additionally, Franklin was an accomplished stage actor and appeared in popular British TV programs like Crossroads and Emmerdale.

Aside from his acting career, Franklin was also a writer. He published a book titled "Forest Wisdom: Radical Reform of Democracy and the Welfare State" and wrote novels set in the Whoniverse. Franklin's passion for politics led him to run as a candidate for the UK Parliament for different parties and even start his own Silent Majority Party.
