Lack of Gritty Storylines

After 17 years on the popular ITV soap Emmerdale, actor Matthew Wolfenden is making a shocking exit. The 43-year-old, who plays David Metcalfe, has cited a lack of gritty storylines as the reason for his departure.

Matthew has been beloved by millions since taking on the role of shopkeeper David Metcalfe in 2006. However, he and co-star Isabel Hodgins were missing from the Yorkshire set for four months. Despite their return, Matthew revealed to friends that he has become bored with his character's recent plotlines.

A source close to the actor stated, "Matthew has had an amazing time on the soap, but feels ready for a change. He hasn't been getting any gritty storylines recently, so he wants to see what else is out there. He's a fan favourite, so he will get a lot of support no matter what he chooses to do next. He's very excited about the opportunities available."

Matthew's departure comes as scriptwriters are figuring out his character's on-screen exit. The possibility of David being killed off has been raised.

Race-Row Probe

In 2021, a race-row probe was conducted by ITV after allegations were made against Matthew. A mixed-race actress claimed that he made a comment and mimicked her accent. However, after a thorough investigation, it was determined that the alleged remark and mimicry were "misheard." No formal action was taken against the actor.

At the time of the probe, Matthew and Isabel were filming a dramatic plot where Victoria, David's former flame, went over a waterfall.

A Relationship Drama of Soap Proportions

Off-screen, Matthew has been involved in a relationship drama that rivals the soap's storylines. In 2007, he began dating co-star Charley Webb, who portrayed Debbie Dingle. The couple got engaged in 2009 and had a son named Buster in 2010.

However, their relationship hit a rough patch in 2013 when Klaire Holloway claimed to have had a secret one-night stand with Matthew. The couple briefly split but reconciled two years later, with the actor explaining that it was never a permanent breakup and they just needed time apart.

Their second son, Bowie Grey, was born in 2015, and they tied the knot at Ripley Castle in North Yorkshire in 2018. They welcomed their third child, Ace, in July 2019.

Dancing on Ice Victory and Memorable Moments

In 2012, Matthew won the dance competition show Dancing on Ice alongside his partner, Russian skater Nina Ulanova.

Throughout his time on Emmerdale, Matthew had some standout moments, including wearing his ex-fiancée Leyla Harding's wedding dress to The Woolpack.

When asked why he hadn't been axed in 2021, Matthew humorously replied, "Maybe they haven't anyone else to run the shop. You just have to keep focused on work and never be late. And always be nice to the producer. I love coming into work, the moment I don't is when I'd say, 'Right, it's time to leave now'."

Emmerdale has chosen not to comment on Matthew's departure.
