Henry Newton will be coming back to the cobbles

Who is Henry Newton in Coronation Street?

Henry Newton is the son of Philip Newton, the grandson of Cecil Newton and heir to the Newton & Ridley brewery fortune as well as the director of the brewery that supplies the Rovers Return on Coronation Street.

He met Gemma (played by Dolly-Rose Campbell) at a party in November, 2017, and was soon smitten with her for being a breath of fresh air, miles away from the girls he usually dated – although she fibbed and told him her name was Jemima and she was a nurse.

Gemma did a runner from the party when the police arrived without realising who Henry was – and without giving him her number.

She left her shoe at the party though and – in true Cinderella style – he decided to find her.

It was Norris Cole that led Henry to Gemma in the Rovers.

Liz McDonald recognised him as Cecil Newton’s grandson and told Gemma she’d landed on her feet.

The pair embarked on a romantic relationship but Chesney Brown (Sam Aston) was far from happy for Gemma.

Why did Gemma Winter and Henry Newton break up?

Chesney overheard Henry talking to his friend Hugo Crowhurst (Adam Jowett) during a double date at the Bistro while Hugo was laughing about how fiery Gemma was and how he was going to win the bet.

This led him to realise Henry was only Gemma as part of a cruel bet to humiliate her.

A horrified Chesney tried to tell Gemma the truth, but it was only when she heard Hugo saying to Henry how he believed he’d fallen for ‘it’ that she realised what was going on.

She dumped three plates of food over Henry’s head before congratulating Hugo on winning the bet and telling him to spend his winnings on some mouthwash because his breath stank.

Henry tried to convince Gemma that it had started off as a bet but he developed genuine feelings for her but she assured him it was too late.

When did Henry Newton leave Coronation Street?

Henry vanished from Weatherfield in March, 2018, but he came back in July that same year, determined to win Gemma back.

This was despite him being engaged to Cressida Lanscombe, as Gemma discovered through social media.

He approached Gemma in the Bistro and told her he’d disowned his parents and given up his inheritance and it was her he wanted to be with.

Gemma was initially suspicious of Henry, but when he revealed he was planning on buying her the Rovers Return as a sign of his love, she was won over.

The pair reunited with the firm intention of getting their hands on the iconic pub but they were outbid by Jenny and Johnny Connor.

But things took a nasty turn for Henry when he tried to con both of the Rovers Return owners out of nearly £20,000.

Gemma decided to stay loyal to them, leaving Henry to a grisly fate.

The heir was last seen in late August, 2018, being bundled into the back of a car by two men planning to break his legs with a sledgehammer.

For the following five years, ITV viewers wondered it Henry had met his maker and the Manchester-based drama refused to clear up the mystery.

But with Henry set to return to Coronation Street to a married Gemma and Chesney – could he be up to his bad schemes again?

Minor details of his return have already been revealed by HOAR Online.

A cash-strapped and overwhelmed Gemma will be reunited with her former boyfriend as she agrees to work for him.

But how will Chesney take it? What happened to Henry during his time away from the Street?
