Introduction

Christmas preparations are well underway, but this year, children's wish lists may look a little different. Rather than rushing to unwrap presents under the tree, more and more children are asking for something else entirely.

Video Game-related Gifts on the Rise

A recent study by the Entertainment Software Association (ESA) has found that children are asking for more video game-related goods than ever before. However, it's not traditional consoles and games that they want, but rather online-only items.

In-game Currencies and Subscriptions

According to the ESA study, 72% of children want something video game-related for Christmas. Of those, 39% are asking for video game subscriptions, 29% want in-game currency like Fortnite V-Bucks or Roblox Robux, and 22% still prefer physical games.

The Shift to Digital Games

Although expensive consoles remain popular, with 38% of children wanting one, digital games are gaining more popularity. In fact, studies show that up to 90% of games purchased are now digital downloads.

Gift Cards and Parental Support

Alongside video games, subscriptions, and in-game currency, gift cards are also a sought-after gift. As many as 70% of children prefer gift cards over pre-selected presents. Furthermore, a significant 57% of parents plan on buying their children video game-related gifts, with an average spending of $500.

Conclusion

It's clear that children's Christmas wish lists are evolving, with a shift towards video game-related gifts. From in-game currencies to gift cards, the digital gaming industry is capturing the attention of young players and their parents alike.
