American Union Strike Could Cause Delays

A recent announcement has left the gaming community in a state of uncertainty, as a potential strike by the American union SAG-AFTRA could disrupt the release of several highly-anticipated video games. The strike, aimed at securing better benefits for actors, has already affected TV and film production, and now it seems that the gaming industry could also be impacted.

Compensation for Actors in Focus

At the heart of the strike is the demand for fair compensation for actors on non-filming days, such as rehearsals, as well as improved pay for extras, background dancers, and singers. Actors are also seeking increased residual pay to ensure financial stability between projects.

Impact on Video Game Industry

While most video games do not heavily rely on live-action actors, many utilize voice actors and motion-capture artists. If the strike extends to the gaming sector, delays in game development are expected. It's worth noting that upcoming releases for which filming work has already been completed will not be affected.

Major Gaming Publishers and Hollywood Ties

The strikes target ten companies, several of which have ties to Hollywood. Blindlight, Formosa, and Voiceworks serve as agencies that provide voice actors to various gaming studios, meaning that not only major publishers, but also several AAA games from studios, could be affected.

Impacted Companies and Their Games

Here is a list of the companies and the games they work on that are included in the strikes:

  • Activision Productions Inc. – Call of Duty, Diablo, Overwatch
  • Blindlight LLC – Redfall, Deathloop, Life is Strange
  • Disney Character Voices Inc. – Kingdom Hearts, Disney Dreamlight Valley
  • Electronic Arts Productions Inc. – EA Sports FC, Apex Legends, Star Wars Jedi: Survivor
  • Epic Games, Inc. – Fortnite, Rocket League
  • Formosa Interactive LLC – God of War, Borderlands, The Last of Us
  • Insomniac Games Inc. – Spider-Man, Ratchet and Clank
  • Take 2 Productions Inc. – Grand Theft Auto, Red Dead Redemption
  • VoiceWorks Productions Inc. – Spongebob Squarepants, Saints Row, Nickelodeon
  • WB Games Inc. – Hogwarts Legacy, Batman, Mortal Kombat
