FANS of The Masked Singer are already trying to crack the cryptic clues to uncover the identity of a Steps star.

Last night, viewers tuned in for the new series of the ITV show, which sees celebrities sing from behind masks and give cryptic clues about their identity.

Already, fans have been hard at work trying to crack the identities of the hidden celebrities using the show clues.

Viewers think they already have the first star – dubbed Knitting – sussed as a singer from the 90s pop group Steps.

The star, who appeared to have a northern accent, wowed with their impressive voice on Sunday night’s new show.

But many felt they recognised the voice behind Knitting, who is wrapped in pink and blue threads, as Claire Richards.

Fans flooded Twitter with their theories, as they put together clues from the first videotape about the hidden star.

“Knitting is Claire Richards,” one said. “Cutting shapes = steps. 26 stitches makes 5, 6, 7, 8. Hold Me In Your Arms, H & Claire’s song. Oh, and it’s her voice. Don’t try to hide Claire.”

“Knitting is absolutely Claire Richards! She’s crafty, loves knitting, 26 clue refers to Steps being around 26 years, magpie for One For Sorrow,” a second said.

A third wrote: “Claire Richards is knitting, nice try disguising but the voice is dying to burst through the stitches!”

“Knitting is Claire, she’s changing her speaking voice. The singing voice sounds like her at times,” a fourth added.

While a fifth concluded: “Claire Richards from Steps. ‘Morning’ and ‘present’ – she presented SMTV Live.”

Claire rose to fame in 1997 as part of pop band Steps, who have hits including 5, 6, 7, 8, Tragedy and One for Sorrow.

Last night’s first episode revealed the 12 new celebrity contestants singing from behind their masks.

Knitting was joined by Ghost, Otter, Jellyfish, Phoenix and duo Cat and Mouse in the first group stage.

Knitting found themselves in the bottom three – and could be at risk of elimination if they fail to impress later on.

There are still more characters to face the music, though – including Jacket Potato, Piece of Cake, Pigeon, Rhino and Rubbish.

The Masked Singer continues next Saturday at 6.30pm on ITV.
