THOUSANDS of struggling pubs will get a boost today as pints will be made up to 11p cheaper than in supermarkets.

A new Brexit Pubs Guarantee will ensure that pubs will always pay less alcohol taxes on beers and drinks on tap, than buying them in megastores.

The price of Prosecco will drop by 61p and 500ml 3.4 percent pale ale by 20p a bottle

New draft relief for pubs will also be extended to help small firms.

And the biggest shake up on alcohol duties in a generation will come into place, where drinks will be taxed depending on how strong they are.

It means pale ales, pre-mixed gin and tonic, English sparkling wine, and prosecco will be taxed less.

Irish cream will drop by 3p, cans of 5% ABV ready to drink spirit mixers by 6p, Prosecco by 61p and 500ml 3.4% pale ale by 20p a bottle.

But wines, spirits and ports will see higher taxes – with between 50p and a pound added on the cost of an average bottle.

The teetotal PM will be visiting a beer festival today to mark the occasion.

He said last night: “Not only will today’s changes mean that the price of your pint in the pub is protected, but it will also benefit thousands of businesses across the country.

“We have taken advantage of Brexit to simplify the duty system to reduce the price of a pint, and to back British pubs.”

Chancellor Jeremy Hunt added: “British pubs are the beating heart of our communities and as they face rising costs, we’re doing all we can to help them out.

“Through our Brexit Pubs Guarantee, we’re protecting the price of a pint.”

Ministers say that 38,000 pubs will benefit from the changes – but most duties will rise in line with inflation after being frozen.

However, some firms have lowered the amount of alcohol in their beers in an attempt to get around the new strengthening rules.

It means they are paying the same for a weaker pint.
